Nat
Yes I met Glenn and his partner at the car's first rally - "The rally in the
Valley" a couple of years ago. Mega money spent, (did you say $52K) but
what a machine! (The Black BMW road cars his partner drives isn't bad
either).
As you said Nat, money is no object to this outfit. He swapped alternators
at the halfway and his service truck had a full set of running gear for
spares.

I think Glenn basically just likes to have a thrash in rallies as each time
I saw him the car was sideways, doing 180's 360's everyway but smooth and
straight!

That Les Collins L18 block (2.23L) working at full tilt in the night forest
air sounded bullet proof all the time however. Well worth a trip into the
bush and eating dust all night just to hear it!

Reminded me of Geoff Portman's legendary 1600 "grunter engined" IFK250,
when he finished 27 seconds ahead of Colin Bond's factory RS2000 Escort to
win the Alpine Rally in November 1978. This was the closest finish ever in
an Australian Rally to that time. Remember those Alpine's were three day
,1500Km enduros, not one of todays 1hour 55 minute, 175 Km sprints.

During the Australian Rally Championship in 1978, this 1600 won the
Lutwytche Rally in Queensland early in the year, blowing away the factory
stars/cars and stamping Datsun 1600's firmly in the minds of young(er) rally
fans (me included), who could actually afford one of these!
The 1600 came forth in the Bega Valley Rally behind Greg Carr (works
Escort), Ross Dunkerton (works 240Z) Colin Bond (works Escort). It ran
second to Colin Bond in the Endrust round of the ARC in South Aus, beating
the recognised "works Datsuns" driven by Ross Dunkerton and George Fury,
just a month before winning the legendary 1978 Repco Alpine Rally event.

The big difference for the Alpine Rally was that the Portman/Runnells 1600
had been fitted an LSD and a 1:1 (option) 5 speed box fitted, both for the
first time! Portman said after the event that he had never driven with an
LSD before and was staggered that they used 18 tyres for the event.
