For low budget rallyists, 18 tyres for one event was a lot!

For an Alpine Rally, which ran from 6 pm Friday nite to late Sunday
afternoon, with one 8 hour break, I used to budget for 1 set of 6 tyres, 2
sets of front brake pads and about 500 litres of fuel, in our 1600.

A mate of mine, Chris Wall built a really good 1600 rally car, seam welded,
using works suspension parts, but building his own engine. He ran it for 5
years in the Victorian Rally championship series, finishing in the top 10
each year and in the top 3 for some individual events. He never touched the
engine apart from oil changes and ignition.

This car ran between 14 and 20 rallys a year and ran 7th outright in the
Alpine Rally in its fourth year, (15th outright the previous year), against
84 entries including all the ARC crews. It beat cars that had mega dollars
spent on engine improvements over the same period. The basic reason for
Chris's success was simple basic preparation and skillful driving (having a
reasonable navigator was also a help in those days). Chris finally wrote
this Datto off in a Begonia Rally, during one of the first daylight special
stage TV events run in Australia. It was Chris's one and only major "off".
Another mate Mick Ellis, built Dattos for a couple of the round Australia
events. The first was a beautiful red 180BSSS, and later with Chris, a 120Y
of all things - it didnt get to Perth - cracked diff housing.

Earlier, I helped Mick build a Datto 1600 that he and Ian Baxter drove to
finish 23rd. in the second London Sydney Event (1978). This car was a total
shell 3 days before we put it in a container to send it to England,
completely set up. I drove that car home from the Sydney finish and it was
still running really strongly.

That car ran next in a four day "Rediplan" rally in NW Victoria and SW NSW.
I was also involved, navigating in Chris's Wall's 1600. Mick hit a large
tree at over 160KPH, flattening it to the windscreen on the drivers side
(after previously side swiping a tree and later lightly rolling on to the
roof). The service crew passed us, having heard of the problem. We told
them the car was a right off but they insisted they'd get it running. They
used a gas axe to straighten the inner guard enough to install a new front
RH strut and guard, and the car finished the event high enough placed for it
to be included in our team of three cars with the highest finishing places!
It was then retired to the wrecking yard.

Before this in the 1970's, Rally's then called Car "Trials" were basically
winter night time activities, run deep in the bush on really grotty, wet
tracks and relying on map reading navigation as much as car performance.
Speeds were lower due to the roughness, slipperyness and tightness of these
forestry tracks, which rarely ever had cars driven on them.

Good cars to run were VW's (Bugs), Peugeot 404/504, EH/HR Holdens, LC/LJ
Toranas, Renault R8/10/16's,
Ford 105EAnglia's/Cortinas/Escorts and of course Datsun 1600's, which were
seen as the "new age" rally machines. Light, but fast and unbreakable.

My 1970's rally days rides were, in order. FE Holden (one gear, second, was
useful - broke crankshafts regularly), Ford "Angria" (Anglia105E fitted with
a 1500GT Cortina engine) fast, but troublesome engine and electrics, Mini
Deluxe, then upgraded to Mini Cooper S, Torana LJ XU1, then a Datsun 1600.
In the late 1980's I navigated in 2 very competitive Datsun 1600's (refer
above) and a less competitive Mazda RX2. (Kids had forced retirement from
ownership of rally cars by then)

Sorry to bore you guys with memories, I'm on holidays this week.
