Brett Thermostats stuff up!! even new ones. For some reason Dattos seem to stuff em up faster than most others. I have had to change mine just about every 12months or so. There are two different thermostats for L series. Not sure of the exact numbers but something like 82 and 88 referring to their opening temp. Some people even change them for summer and winter (So I'm told. I'm on the Gold Coast - I don't even need a choke!) U need the thermostat to control the water flow thru the system. If u remove the thermostat the water flow will be controlled mostly by the speed of the water pump, usually too fast and consequently getting different operating temps between No1 and No 4 (thanks Brad) and also, the flow through the radiator will be too fast to effectively cool the water. So.. hard to warm up and then easy to overheat... Gauges, especially cheap ones, are notorious for stuffing up too. The std gauge is generally considered reliable and u should be operating between the "T" and the "E" of temp. Compare your std gauge with the other gauge. One thing Datto motors don't like is being fried!!! If the car smells hot then I'd be seriously looking at your radiator. Is it 30 years old?? Has it just started to do this or has it always run at just under 100? My worked L20B runs @ about 85 all day Are u in Hobart or Cairns? Hope this helps Cheers Mick
