As you
probably know I'm also in Canberra. You should be running a couple of degrees
below your thermostat's opening temperature if you have a heater that's working,
and as Mick said Dattos chew thermostats especially cheap ones, and that is very
much the case in Canberra. If the extreme cold doesn't kill them, then the
following summer temps do as we have a very wide range as far as ambient
temperatures go - interestingly our Toy runs same temp all year round and
I've replaced the thermostat once in 15 years, the Datto's gone through a
box of them in the same time. I've gone back to genuine Nissan thermostat this
year in the never ending search for one that can cope with our climate, so far
it's been good, like it's still holding the same temp as it did in the beginning
of winter. Others (Brad, Mick etc) have said why you should always use a
thermostat and it is especially true in Canberra - run without one here and your
engine will die and in quick time.
On a 1600 gauge you should run above the 2nd thick minimum line ~75
degrees. With heater on (drops temp ~3 degrees in Canberra), an 82 will
indicate between T & E and if you've got an 88 in that's on or
around the left side of the M. If your L18 really is running at 100
then I also would have though that it would be showing signs of being warm
under the bonnet, and the heater would be very hot - mine fries me at 85
degrees and the Datto is very toasty by the time I get to Civic from
Belco.
Any signs of a blown head gasket, i.e. running on 3 cyls in the
morning at start-up, 1 really clean plug, losing coolant, excessive pressure in
no time after start-up, blowing bubbles out the radiator cap etc - and
I presume you're using a good anti-freeze, most of the cars you see dead on the
side of the road in the mornings here haven't got the required strength coolant
(if any) and eventually they freeze the radiator and boil, our Cap
city listers just don't have that problem (-:. When you drive at 80 k's
here when the abient temperature is -5 then the air temp hitting the
radiator is damn cold, in dead calm the temp hitting the radiator is around -20C
and without a thermostat fitted this is the temperature that the cooling jacket
at #1 cylinder will get hit with, (plus your heater wont work
properly.)

i'm in canberra so its damn cold... the car was doing something similar a few months ago but the problem went away. i've recently installed a VDO temp gauge, is there any chance that i need to get it calibrated? (i dont understand how the sender works). the car doesn't smell hot (and i've cooked a datto engine before so i know what it smells like). i'll throw the old gauge back in and see what sort of readings i get.cheers for the help
