Is it that simple to swap to R31 discs Terry? Do you have to fabricate brackets etc ? What bits actually get used from the R31 Skyline? Seems like a pretty common swap here in Australia but in the U.S. they seem to go for a 280ZX brake swap instead. This is the path I am going down and I have already got all the 280ZX donor bits I need. Solid discs for the rear and vented discs for the front. I am using the Dime Quarterly article as a guide, but there are brackets to make for the rear and a bit of mucking around with the front struts to accept smaller diameter springs that will fit inside the towers. Also the 280ZX calipers are single pots only. As I have several 1600s, I may try an R31 swap on one of the other cars if it is an easier option than the 280ZX swap.

Finned alloy drums are pretty good as far as drums go, but they're still drums and inferior by a long way over a simple rear disc conversion like the R31. You may have guess that I hate drums even on a street car.

Can you still get those finned drums new? I was at a wrecking yard in Perth and spotted a pair on a 240Z, but the wrecker was very reluctant t to sell them to me.He reckoned that they were pretty hard to come by. I've seen lots of people racing 1600s with them on, they upgrade the front brakes with bigger and/or vented discs, and just bolt on the aluminium Z drums on the rear. Easier than the hassle of going to rear discs -although rear discs are the ultimate stopping option obviously.
