Stuey,

Minor modes required to shoehorn a L20B/5 spd into a 1600

Engine: use 1600 engine mounts, brackets, sump & oil pickup. You usually
need to modify the exhaust (L20B ports are ~3/8" higher that L16/L18), move
the throttle linkage on the firewall for the same reason (if solid bar being
used, cable should be OK) and also possibly a 9" type i.e. thinner air
filter if you're using stock L20B downdraft carbie, as some L20B stock
filters hit the 1600 bonnet. Minor electrical changes if you're changing
over from stock 1600 alternator eg Lucas or Hitachi externally regulated to
L20B Bosch internally regulated - most 1600 have already been converted but
not all. Heater hoses of the 1600 are sometimes required, again depends on
what the L20B is out of, Bluebirds use a water tap near the starter in the
long side hose, 1600 have tap inside the car.

Gearbox: modify gearbox xmember (varies depending on what the 5 spd is out
of - i.e. long box, stumpy or dogleg), assuming long box you need 955mm
tailshaft (stock 1600 is 1090mm), flat type rear engine mount eg 240K, C210
or Stanza (can't recall whether 200B fit), longer speedo cable eg 180B auto
or 620, if you want to use the 1600 adjustable clutch release bar you have
to change it over in the bell housing, make sure that you use the release
bearing that goes with the clutch being used (different length i.e. shorter
is used on 1600 to most other Datsun clutches), if you want to use the auto
adjusting clutch release rod off the 5 spd box, then just bolt the 1600
slave cylinder up the 5 speed and bleed it - it's that easy. Some 5 spd
boxes will need a small adjustment to the hole in the tranny tunnel, easy to
do but you are supposed to re-enforce the tunnel for rego purposes, and
watch out for the rear brake line as it runs right under the top of the
tranny tunnel, cut it and you'll not be happy.

That's about it, long time since I've done this personally so I'm sure to
have missed something that someone else will pick me up on.

Have fun with it,

regards
Terry

Subject: Gearboxs, 4spd Vs 5spd

hey listers, i am about to purchase an immaculate 1600 that has the original
4spd behind an L16.what i am going to do, is once i get it, i am putting my
L20B with a 5 spd box into it, What i am wondering is if there are any
changes, mods that i have to do, like different shorter tailshaft, and will
i have to cut another hole in the tranny tunnel for the gear stick??? i am
guessing that the 4spd is shorter in length that the 5spd, or are they the
same??? Thanks guys/girls stuey...
