I have just finished building my 1991 GTiR tarmac rally car and I also own a Subaru version 6 STi Tarmac rally car so I can tell you that the crap over the GTiR is undeserved. The GTiR intercooler is in the same place as the STi. The power output is similar 172 kW Vs 206 kW The strength and stability of the GTiR is superior (They both weigh the same) The bad name came from the fact that it was discontinued early (so it was considered it musta been a lemon) but it was discontinued due to its prohibitive cost. This would have been a $70+ k car in 1994. Its problems are similar to a WRX, weak gearbox, position of the Intercooler, mostly a front wheel drive etc plus one that is easily fixed. When changing the suspension settings the car has a nasty bump steer problem. By fitting a rose jointed bump steer kit this is fixed. (Available from whiteline)
Price is the main factor under ten for a GTiR rally use only compared to around $30k for an STi. You wanna know about STi, GTiR ask me. But I dont do dirt. (Im not that good a driver.)
