I am speaking more to being able to search by a specific subject area,
model, etc. Like Rusty's parts site. Searching by thread title often gives
way to many results.

Well with this setup we are on has a archives function that you can sort 
however you want, by thread, author, date, etc.  As long as people keep 
the subject line relevant, then that works good.  As far as the old 
list/system goes, well, we all know how that works.  It basically 
creates the archives from the digests, which you cant really sort or 
anything.
