yes, that is the common failure mode. What I do is remove the shaft, put some super glue on the spot where that gear is supposed to ride and let it dry. After it drives I reinstall the shaft and it works. The dried glue gives it something to grab ahold of. Others file(rough up) the shaft in that area and it supposed to work the same.
