The two I replaced both had a hex at the bottom near the threads. I used a
crows-foot wrench on an extension with a ratchet. But I heard someone
(maybe the Mercedessource guy) mention the vice grip approach ... so maybe
some came without the hex?

Subject: [MBZ] How to R&R the primer pump on a W123 turbodiesel

I have the original plunger-type primer pump on my new 1983 300TD, and it's
leaking fuel so must be replaced. Can't figure out how to remove it. The
Bosch replacement pump has an embedded hex nut in the screw threads so
installation won't be a problem. I don't see any obvious way to remove the
old pump other than with a vice grip, which doesn't seem quite appropriate
for a Mercedes.
