Duh!  I should have known/thought of that. Anyway - all the iron is
gone, went to a real plumbing supply store instead of using the rebate
"gift" card at Lowes, and bought all real brass fittings.
It's amazing how bad two inches of iron and cutting oil can make water taste!
All is well now - nice clean tasting water, and the wife is happy!
