apparently, ZDDP's an issue for the newer cheaper Cats, but you gotta' wonder, since at least some BMW motos (like mine) have catalytic converters,...!

found this response allegedly from Castrol while snooping around looking for suggestions on how to deal with the concern of not enough ZDDP in oil:

"Castrol does offer the following products that contain Zinc at a level that is higher than the Zinc level found in oils (API SG) marketed during the "muscle car" era of

time:
* Castrol GTX 20W-50 (SL,SM)
* Castrol GTX Diesel 15W-40 (CI4,CH4,CG4,CF4,CF,SL)
* Castrol GTX High Mileage 20W-50 (SL,SM)
* Castrol HD 30 (SL,SM)
* Castrol HD 40 (SL,SM)

* Castrol Syntec Blend Truck 15W-40 (CI4,CH4,CG4,CF4,CF,SL)(Semi- synthetic)

* Castrol Tection Extra 15W-40 (CI4Plus, CI4,CH4,CG4,CF4,SL)
* Castrol Hypuron S 15W-40 (CI4Plus,CH4,CG4,SL)(Semi-synthetic)"

Does zinc effect pollution itself, or just shorten the life of a cat,
therefore reducing the machines ability to scrub the exhaust? I read
somewhere that the move to reduce ZDDP was to force manufactures to get at
least 100,000 miles out of all cats.

BMW is nutty about getting the proper ZDDP levels in their motorcycles;
such that they still specify SG grade oils (and nothing higher) since SG
grade still has an 'acceptable' level of Zinc. later grades than SG have
less ZDDP, as it contributed to pollution.
  any good FLAPS should be able to order SG grade oil like Castrol if
that's what you're really after.

Hi Ed,
  All I've read about getting correct ZDDP levels (which is quite a bit) -
indicate using a diesel rated oil is a good option. The other is to use one
of the many ZDDP Additives available.... I'm using Cam-Tune but there are
many others ...

good luck -

 I've run the 15/40 in all my Volvo's and my gaser E320 Seems to get the
job
done. Never had a mechanical failure due to oil breakdown - ever.

 I use the dino Rotella Diesel 15/40 in the old 300E gasser, and it seems
to
work well. I like it for the higher zink content. I'm not sure what to
run
in my old 911 now that the zink levels have been reduced, but I'm
thinking
to maybe go with Rotella in that too. Any thoughts ?

I don't see much choice in Mobil 1 here but when I go over the border
into
the USA, I always look at WalMart to see
what they have.

Do I need to worry about the coding on the jugs or is any reasonably
heavy
Mobil 1 going to be ok for my old 300D?

So far, I have just stuck with the Shell Rotella oil.
