May just be that the refining boys are making GAS because there was such an uproar about the rise in price and political pressure is being exerted to get more out there to drop the price. If you are making petrol, maybe you are not making diesel for road use, just earmarking it for home heating?

I scanned the referenced url story, but I didn't see anything directly
related to the price if diesel rising.

Usually, the reason that's given for the price of diesel rising in the
fall is the increase in use of home heating oil in the north east. (I
was just up at my sister's in Boston and I noticed the level in her tank
was about 2/5ths. I asked her about it and she noted that they hadn't
filled it for the winter yet, but I'll bet they've been thinking about it.)
