Thanks Curt, I'm going to check the belt and then probably pull the VR package
and check the brushes.

Maybe...

In my experience it means the alternator is toast. I went through that many
many times with my 240D before getting a good McParts one.

Learn from my mistakes, don't buy a McParts alternator...

Voltage regulator is worth a shot though.

All,

In the last few weeks, on my '87 300TD with 317k miles, my alternator light has
started to glow faintly at times, usually right after starting.  Yesterday it
even briefly came on twice while I was driving to work.

Is this most likely the voltage regulator?  Is the proper test to measure
voltage at the battery, pass is 13.5 volts or greater, but less than 14.5 volts?

Very respectfully,
/s/
