Truck drivers call that "floating" - and good drivers do it
all the time.  With non-syncromesh transmissions it is
actually the fastest way through the gears, if the driver
doesn't miss.

It pretty easy with a syncromesh transmission because the
transmission blocks the shifter from allowing the shift into
gear until the speed matches.  So the trick is to put light
pressure against the syncros until the the speed matches and
the shift lever moves - then "snick" it into gear.
