The orifice tube is in the inlet of the evaporator.  The accumulator, which 
catches the excess liquid freon, is probably up front.  Orifice tube systems 
flood the evaporator under some conditions, so there must be a tank to catch 
the liquid rather than slug it into the compressor. Freeze protection is 
provided by a pressure switch on the accumulator, which also acts as a low 
pressure safety switch.

To change the orifice tube, you must remove the inlet line at the evaporator, 
the tube will be an insert.  A real PITA to remove, too.

I agree, you should check the oil in the system.  Usually the best way is to 
remove and empty the compressor, then refill with the correct amount.
