If you ever do any even light offroading don't bother... Last fall I spent one day riding around with my cousins in an '04 Escape. We had it stuck twice and after that kept to dry graded roads. The places we got stuck were just wet, not real mud to speak of. I bet my 240D (with oil in the engine) would have made it up. As it was we had to put branches on the road. The tires on it were of course a serious limitation but it seemed like the 4wd wasn't real interested in putting power anywhere that had traction no matter what we did with the controls. It also had very little clearance.
