This is not going to be a cheap endeavor - 124 suspension parts are WAY
more expensive than 123 parts...

Sounds like you're "doing it right". I replaced most of the rear links
on the '90 124. I could not get the tie rods (with the ball joints) off
at the chassis end, and they didn't look that bad. I also replaced the
tie rods and lower ball joints in the front end, and got it aligned.
It's a lot better now, but I think I need to go ahed and replace the
mounts, as you plan to do next.
