Sharpie... I read once that you should use wax pencils. So I searched
high and lo for a wax pencil and finally gave up. 3 years later I
realized crayons! are wax pensils.

I used a special tools. Definitely get the Mercedes sliding fluid or spray
them with silicon to aid installation. If you do the tie rods, mark the cam
bolts to the frame with a chisel or sharpie so you can get them close. Be
ready for an alignment when you are done. I removed the entire subframe from
the car when I did mine. Its easier than you think. A tranny jack under the
differential is helpful.

Brian,
Thanks for the caution re: torque bolts while car is level. How do you
recommend attacking the sub frame mounts?

There are several special tools that aid in subframe mount and lower
wheel carrier joint replacement. However, they are not necessary. A
spring compressor is not necessary for rear springs. The single most
important thing to remember is to tighten all the bolts with the weight
of the car on the wheels! Don't tighten all the links with the springs
in and the car on jack stands!

Dieselvolk,
I'm putting together a Rusty-gram to get the rubber and hardware bits
so that I can rebuild the rear suspension on my '95 E300. I'm
planning to go whole hog: differential to sub frame mounts, sub frame
to body mounts, and all the various bushings and torque arms and
struts that hold the wheel carrier in position. I'm expecting at
least a boat ride at this year's Rusty-Q, as I've probably already
made two or three of his boat payments.
Someone, I believe it was Dieselhead, recently shared their
observations, and I remember that removing the mounts that hold sub
frame to body was loads of fun and games. What tools/hardware should
I gather in advance to help this procedure along?
A small ball of C-4 and some det cord will have it out in a jiffy.
Mitch.
