My hope is that I'll get into sand on the way down and hit water. A friend nearby was building a pond in the side of a clay hill. Before they got to the depth he wanted, they hit wet sand and had to get the dozer out. He said that was about 18 feet.

It sounds like you are driving a sand point. It won't get much water in clay. It is made to take up water in sand or gravel layers. BTW, I lived at the top of a 100' hill, but water was about 7' down. THe basement got water in every appreciable rain.
