Marshall (RIP) always said that the Valvoline synthetics were not "true" synthetics and thus not worth the premium over dinosaur juice. I'm not sure which of their several products he was referring to, though. FWIW (not much), I used to have an Audi 4000CS Quattro. Bought it at 180K mi or so from the original owner, who said he'd used Valvoline synthetic in the silver bottle since day 1. Since the car seemed happy with it, I kept it up. I took off the valve cover a few years later to change the gasket, and was struck by the fact that the cam lobes were clean enough to eat off of---absolutely no visible evidence of wear.
