I have never had any problems with York compressors at all, but it has been a while since I have regularly driven a car with one. They used to be cheap to buy. I checked autozone for a quick reference and rebuilts are 155 new are 218

I believe in originality and OE/OEM parts wherever practical, and with the resources we have in Rusty, Kaleb and internet searches, it is almost always practical.

However, a york rebuilt has a very short life cycle/MTBF. A new York is a little better, but expensive. A japanese rotary used compressor, probably has more MTBF than a new York and will be a lot less drag on the engine. Look for a wreck with under 100k or with an obviously new compressor. To me, in the PHX area, a reliable A/c system is a big deal.

A 115 240D probably never going to be a museum piece, and as long as the compressor mount is on the engine, it can always be converted back to a york if you decide to spend the money ($30k to 150k) to restore and show it.

good point....

HP robbing. A new york is ~$250 and takes a lot of HP. A rotary compressor takes less HP and is easily available for a pick and pull for

A 115 240D does not have an excess of HP to to waste on a York. The reliability/life cycle of a york is less than a Japanese rotary compressor.
The sanyos MB uses typically last for 200-300k miles.

why not just replace it with the proper York compressor? They should be
 easy to find new/rebuilt/

My guess is that the body is solid, if the car has always lived in the desert. Check for rust/bondo iin the rockers, behind the front wheel, in front of the rear wheel and in the trunk wells. It looks like Midnight blue. I don't remember ever seeing that before a 123. If I lived in Phx, I'd pay $2000 for it if it is as good as it appears it might be. 140k is not that much on a OM615 I think with a litte ingenuity you can rig a rotary compressor from a honda/toada to fit on the compressor mounting and even use the original belt size. A compressor from a u-pull should not be that expensive. Be sure to get the manifold and a good chunk of each hose
 with it.
