Not only do they warm up slowly, but if you get stuck sitting somewhere (like 
for a slow train crossing) in bitter cold weather, they will cool off while you 
are stopped!

A bad t-stat usually shows up as an engine that never gets up to operating temp 
in the winter (80C).  My first 300D had a bad one, ran fine in the summer, but 
once fall got here, the temp would never get up to 80.
