Up here (Vancouver WA) the NAPA mostly caters to the shop trade too. My experience with Autozone has been much better. Their counter people (mostly gals) are quite knowledgeable and helpful. They actually have opened up a new store closer to my home, I'll have to check them out. Carquest is pretty good too.
