I'm thinking that 228.1, 228.3, and 228.5 may be more applicable. Hard to
tell,
as MB has punted with the statement from 223.2: "This table only contains oil
types for engines that are currently in
production! Information on unlisted, older engine models can be found in the
vehicle operator's manuals or the maintenance procedures."

The situation really is sad. The API specifications have changed, so your
owner's manual is not useful, and MB's oil sheets don't help much either.

 Very respectfully,

Thanks Jaime! I knew they were out there somewhere.

So it looks like 229.1 and 229.3 are current specs for oils
compatible with older engines. The "Low SPAsh" oils are not
compatible with older engines. (~1990 and before)

The "low SPAsh" oils may not cause obvious damage, or may work ok,
depending on how tight your engine is. They often lower viscosity,
and are noticeably noisier with noticeably higher oil consumption.
