I think the 228.3 is a spec for dino oil. I think there is a
differenc spec for synthetic, labelled as "extended interval."
What would make sense is if MB would list engine type or group engine
types together, and list the suitable oil for each engine type or
group. Or at least have a website where you can type in or choose
engine type, then it would either give you the approved list or the
spec sheet(s) for that engine type.
Jaime, you listening?
when oil was oil and mostly what we have to do was figure out the
right weight, it was pretty easy. Then you could find the pretty
simple approved list. Now we have several generations of very
different oil specs and a very confusing and hard to decipher "MB
internal" set of dozens of MO spec sheets relating to oil. Seems
like a simple system to interpret the correct oil for an engine for
service techs and owners would be a good use of webspace.
There is a reason that the Star dropped the oil spot. Now it would
take more pages than the entire magazine just for the oil spot.
Rotella T is found on sheet 228.3, along with Mobil Delvac 1300 Super (but no
Mobil 1 products). Perhaps other oils on that sheet would also be
suitable for
older diesel and gasoline engines?
Really makes me wonder if using Mobil 1 in our older diesels is a good idea
these days, given that the oil design specifications have changed to keep pace
with current regulatory/technical changes to modern engines.
I'll see what the lab results show, perhaps next change in my cars I'll try a
conventional oil like the Delvac or Rotella T and compare results.
Very respectfully,

Here is enough information to confuse you for several hours or days:
http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/bevo-sheets-sort1.html
Its searchable. So, Rotella is on sheet 228.3 and 228.31. Delo is also, in
addition to 228.5 and 228.51.
What does all this mean? Well, sheet 221.0 might start to explain it:
http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/d/d/en/Spec_221_0.pdf
Sheet 210.0, 211.0, and on and on might also be useful.
And in the end, I use Rotella T in just about everything built before 1991
or so, gas or diesel.

229.something. I'll make a note next time I'm in there.
It was a diesel-rated 5W-40 I was looking at. They had several
different weights.
