Well, it was obvious (to me) that this was some sort of design flaw, as I went through two of these chrome plated augers with the same results. I made sure I got OEM parts both times as well, so they couldn't give me the crappy aftermarket parts argument.
Found numerous references to the problem online as well, but as I expected, they didn't care since it was out of warranty.
