I suggest you sprinkle the baking soda over the entire surface of the carpets.. make them white with baking soda... It is a harmless material as far as chemical reaction with the carpet and will vacuum up cleanly. If you cover a greater surface the baking soda will do what it does best even better with greater surface area to absorb the smell.
The carpets are a major fabric surface that has soaked up the smoke residue for the life of the smokers residence, so for greater success, attack that surface. It's cheap and it absorbs odor like crazy. You may want to do several applications with a vacuum between each. Coffee grounds... never had luck with them, but... who doesn't like the smell of fresh brewed coffee?
