A W123 240 will probably not do any better. Because the turbocharger increases engine efficiency, reducing the number of cylinders and loosing the turbo will probably cancel out. In my experience, a turbo 300 in good condition can get _better_ fuel mileage than a normally-aspirated 240 - especially above 50 to 55 MPH (80-90 km/h).
