That is a high zinc level. Good to know as now I can consider that oil as a cheaper alternative to the expensive Brad Penn and Valvoline VR1 I use in my older cars for their high ZDDP content.

I'd guess that Mobil 1 0w20 would fall under this category... hmmm. Zinc in the 1200-1300 range isn't bad, no? See the 1st column below - Since I didn't run these Oils in my cars the only numbers that tell a story are the Additives - all other values are dependent on engine use. So, we have the following Additive Levels - Sodium - 7 15 Potassium - <10 <10 Molybdenum - 42 164 Phosphorus - 1124 1375 Zinc - 1262 1328 Calcium - 1105 3456 Barium - <10 <10 Magnesium - 835 53 Antimony - <30 <30 Vanadium - <1 <1 A test of a new sample of 0W20 Mobil 1 has Additives with values shown in the 2nd column. Obviously, the big differences are in Molbdenum (a lubricating additive and in some situations a indication of Ring Wear), Calcium and Magnesium. There are some minor differences in the ZDDP additives whose abilities are pretty well known. The Calcium is used as Detergents, dispersants, acid neutralizer. The Magnesium is used as a Dispersant, detergent additive, alloying metal. I will leave it at that - I have 1 or 2 other samples of new oil that was done -- I'll dig them out and see if they are relevant - Have a great weekend! You can use M1 CF rated in iron head (OM61x, OM621, OM636) MB Diesels with good results with normal change intervals. Some extended interval might be possible, but you need to use oil analysis to determine soot levels to arrive at change intervals. THe OM60x engines don't get as much soot in the oil as the iron head engines do. ULSD fuels in theory should produce less soot in the iron head Diesels too. The arguments come in whether the CI rated M1 oils still contain high enough levels of some components to adequately protect older Diesels. Beware of Castrol syntec and other "synthetic" oils. They provide NO extended change interval capabilities. Jury is still out on Royal Purple and Valvoline synthetic. List member LarryT can help with oil analysis. I use M1 in my 603s with 10k intervals and dino in the 616s with normal intervals. Let the arguments begin..... I have been reading with interest the threads re the "smoking SDL" and the turbo issues. In them there are references to using M1 oil, and I am a bit confused/curious. I have been under the impression that the older diesels should not be using synthetic oils, and not to switch from dino to synthetic. Am I wrong here??
