i practically *had* to use synthetic oil in our 617; not due to issues with cold starting (we have no issue with that seeing as how we rarely see freezing temps), but due more to the fact that we run Biodiesel. even though B99.9 creates virtually no soot, we were having to change the oil at least every 3K miles due to the fact that even the minimal bit of fuel that would blow-by into the crank would cause even Delo to visibly thin by the time it was due for a 3K mile change. synthetic seems to be much less prone to suffering from the same issue, and also seems to cause the turbo to whine we used to occasionally hear during the first acceleration after cold start to be almost to completely imperceptible now.

since there's no soot buildup to speak of, we've been running Red Line Diesel oil @ 5K change intervals with no perceivable issues.

cheers!

I have been reading with interest the threads re the "smoking SDL" and the
turbo issues. In them there are references to using M1 oil, and I am a bit
confused/curious. I have been under the impression that the older diesels
should not be using synthetic oils, and not to switch from dino to
synthetic. Am I wrong here?? Thanks
