My '06 Jetta TDI has been great. Even when youngest daughter had it as her
car for about a year it has been trouble free. I'm at 135K miles now. Did
the timing belt and the rest of the stuff you do while you are in there at
90K. Had the "lifetime auto transmission" serviced then as well. I
  get, on the average, 44mpg. Plenty quick, reasonably comfortable (
actually it's much more comfortable now that I've lost 100 pounds) and it
has none of the dicey fit and finish issues my '01 Beetle TDI had. If I
wear this one out or my daughter ends up taking it to LA for good, I will
buy another...unless I find my '72 220D in the meantime.
