I think Max is talking about the hitch on a wagon and you are
talking about one on a sedan. The one that attaches to the floor
is in a sedan and the bumper attach point one is on a station
wagon, as far as I have seen anyway. I'm also thinking that the
diff between a euro hitch and an American hitch is that the
American hitch is a at the end a flat bar with a hole in it and a
pin with a ball bolted through the hole. Whereas the euro hitch
is a curved bar (think J laying on it's back with half the curved
part cut off) coming out from under the bumper with a ball at the
vertical tip of the bar.
I put an old hitch that I had for a VW bug on my 83 300D. it
worked out just right. The hitch originally fastened to the bars
that hold the bottom of the transmission and engine mount plate
to the body. I bolted that to the bottom of the spare tire
depression in the trunk with a metal plate on the inside to
provide better support. The back part is bolted to the bottom of
the bumper. I have towed quite a bit of weight on a Harbor
Freight trailer. The one with the 12" rims. I like the bigger
wheels better then those little donuts.

So the American hitch attaches to sheetmetal trunk floor and euro
hitch to bumper mounts?
If I were to find some euro bumpers would they just bolt on? If
not is the conversion easy?

German hitch won't fit unless your car is euro. I had a euro 123
wagon, small bumpers, and sourced a used euro hitch for it. Euro
hitch attaches at bumper points, US-spec cars have different
bumper attach points, so euro hitch won't fit unless you also get
euro bumpers and convert your car.

Hi Dimitri,
As everyone says, your 240 will not have any problem hauling around a
light, I say again, light trailer. When I was looking for trailer
hitches for my daughter's Volvo 240DL wagon, I came across a
couple of
european style receiver hitches. They are nice in that when you are
not towing, the ball is removable and therefore is unable to scape
copious amounts of skin from your shins. You can also mount a bike
rack or small cargo platform if you desire.
I've looked, and I don't seem to be able to find any on-line,
although
I KNOW that I've seen w123 sedans in Germany with that setup.
Best,
Jon
I agree, a euro hitch would be desirable. Might try fleabay.de, or
find a listing of german junkyards. A german equivalent to
car-part.com would be nice.
