Yeah I'm pretty tired, apologies if that didn't make sense, with some dinner in
me lets see if I can do better.

There are actually 2 differences in the new alt vs the old one. The shaft is
longer and the mounting arms mount it farther back. The first is a problem
because the pulley won't meet the key and the nut won't catch the pulley. The
latter is obviously an issue because the pulley doesn't line up with the other
pulleys.

Fixing the latter issue halfway fixes the former so I took my spacers, one went
under the alternator fan (which was too close on this alt anyway), the other
just above the fan. That got the pulley pretty well situated, then I added some
washers between the pulley and the nut which made up the other. Cranked it down
with the impact gun (how did I ever get by without one?) and she's all good.

It's not entirely clear from your description that this modification puts
the pulley on the new one the same distance from the alternator mounting
bracket as it was on the old one.

Is it? Do all of the sheaves (alternator, crank, water pump) line up
properly?

Congratulations!

Sounds like a good idea!
