Hans would be mainly driving in stop go traffic, spending a fair amount of time idling in traffic.
Lets say a 200D with turbo has the same power and torque as a 300D NA.
From what I have been reading a 200DT would be more economical than a 300D, for one thing the 200 has 4 injectors, so that's ~20% less fuel right there. Anyway it's an academic question, MB never sold turbo Diesels here until the 98 W210 so I don't have a real choice.

Under Hans' use patterns, perhaps it wouldn't.

diesels aren't throttled

My 200D is.  There is no mechanical connection between the
foot pedal and the IP.  It senses manifold vacuum.
