Most stuff like this never goes to trial, the prosecutor and the defendant's shyster usually work something out. They are so overloaded with nasty crimes that this sort of thing is an annoyance, and the judge will tell them to go sort it out, let me know what you did, and I will sign off on it.

Not sure how it works down south of the border where you are.
Up here in Canada, you essentially have the right to face your accuser so any trial would require the presence of the witnesses. Also suspect that the government is reluctant to spend much on travel unless it is a big deal case, although I am uncertain on that as I don't do criminal stuff.
