So did he replace the glass or just shrug and tell you to get a
new one for him to try on again?
That seems to be the position of the auto glass shops around
here. If it breaks I have to pay for a new one. doesn't make
sense to me.

Did you replace it or a professional auto glass person?
I ask because I was told by a glass guy who did the back glass in
my 82 300SD (and cracked it as well) that window seals on MBs are
tough to do, especially due to the multiple lips in the seal grooves.
