So properly speaking the solenoid is a portion of a relay?

Well now, that depends on your definition of 'solenoid'.  If
you go by the original meaning, a single coil in serpentine
fashion, then all relays contain solenoids, because all relays
(of the mechanical type) contain coils.

If, on the other hand, you define a solenoid as a moving
metal slug _within_ a coil, which is probably the more
common definition, then very few relays are solenoids.
Probably only the really heavy ones, because the moving
slug pulls harder and can move heavier contacts than the
usual kind that pulls a lever towards a non-moving pole
piece that's within the relay.  More moving parts, though.

I still think the best fix is to tap into your malfunctioning
GP relay, ensure that the contacts are OK, then drive the
coil directly with your own switch and wiring.

That way you exploit all the extant wiring, and can even
restore automatic operation merely by replacing the relay
with a good one.
