They'd also kind of painted themselves into a corner, I forget what 10.1 was
but:
10.2 = Jaguar
10.3 = Panther
10.4 = Tiger
10.5 = Leopard
10.6 = Snow Leopard - possibly named because 10.5 sucked?
10.7 = Lion
10.8 = Mountain Lion

Honestly I think everything after 10.6 is a let down. 10.8 especially just
dumbifies an already dumbed down OS. I hate how they hide stuff. In fact I'm
starting to think my Retina Macbook Pro was a mistake, everything about it is a
pain in the ass, no optical drive, no firewire, stupid external monitor port
nobody else uses. No replaceable battery (or at least they don't want you to
replace it). It can't run Linux off a key drive so there goes my backup plan if
the internal drive takes a dump (saved me more than once on the road).

A student in class last week put 10.9 on and immediately lost his Win8 bootcamp
partition. The data was still there but the OS wouldn't boot any longer.
Typical Apple BS if you ask me. When I worked for Pinnacle they wrote our card
out of 10.3.6, just made it invisible not even "unknown device" in the Apple
system profiler. When Apple wants to mess with you they mess with you.

Because (Apple CEO) Tim Cook got tired of the big-cat naming scheme and all
new versions of OS X are to be named after famous surfing destinations.

As far as the OS upgrade itself, many people at my work have already
upgraded and are pretty happy with it.  We use Macbook Pros as development
boxes and typically load them down pretty heavily with lots of virtual
machines, so we would uncover stability issues pretty quickly if there were
any to speak of.
