Would a nice new LED light fixture not solve the problem with a lot less fuss?

I have wanted to do this for a long time, and in other homes as well, but never
got around to it.

Our current home has very little in the way of outside light coming in to the main living area, primarily due to the
back of the house being "U" shaped with a roof over the center of the "U". At the bottom of the
"U" are sliding glass doors opening into our family room and kitchen area. While this side of the house faces
south, there are 60' oak trees at the back of our very shallow back yard that block the sun even more. As a result of
this the interior portion of the house is what I often refer to as being "tomb-like".

Adding tubular skylights to this area would go a long way to lightening it up,
but before I can convince SWMBO of such a significant alteration to the living
area I'm going to do it in the laundry room. This is a room off the garage
that we enter and exit through, and it has no outside exposure whatsoever. By
putting a tubular skylight here I know the impression will be a favorable one,
ideally gaining acceptance for the method and allowing me to move forward in
doing the same for the living area.

While I have been a fan of Solatube, I found that the Velux line that is
readily available through the big box home improvement stores is just as good
and nowhere near as pricey.

Home Depot is cheaper than Lowe's, but I prefer working with Lowe's. I'm going
to swing by there today and see if they will match Home Depot's price, as it's
about $30 cheaper.

Please keep us posted. I want to have a solar tube installed to shed some light
on a gloomy kitchen, even though it has a window.
