I'm running into the difficulty you had when replacing the hose.  I
have to repair the teeth on the upper alternator housing - the part
that engages the toothed bolt.  The teeth in the alt bracket are
gone and I plan to repair them but to do that I'll need to remove
the York AC Compressor and probably the Alternator and bracket as
well.

I considered removing the compressor completely but it still has gas
in it after 3 years of not being used so it's a tight system.  But
we never use it so I may as well...

You should be able to unbolt the compressor with hoses attached from
the bracket, then tie it back.  That way you don't have to open a
good sealed system.

Also, my memory is not clear, but I'd look very carefully from
underneath.  I am pretty sure it is possible to remove the alt and
brackets from under the car.  It should be much easier than messing
with that dogawful bracket and disturbing a working york.
