Pull the dang tumbler and get it to a locksmith. He will clean it and adjust it back, then will be able to cut a code key, install the tumbler again and adjust so the new key opens all locks

 pocket screwdriver I was able to easily encourage it to move -
 and then the "key" turned easily.

 I haven't yet determined the cause of the problem - but
 wondered if any of you have had a similar problem.  Or am I

It was NOT the tumbler. It jammed with the tumbler out. It is in the post from Philip.
