Ummm, are you forgetting the PowerPC taking over for the original processors, 
the name of which has escaped me now. That would have been OS 8.1 maybe?
Microsoft doesn't make hardware so they have no vested interest in dropping 
support for older hardware. Witness that Win 10 still comes in a 32 bit flavor. 
Apple hasn't supported 32 bit hardware for a long time.

smokin?    Apfel is now following the billyg track of forcing upgrades.  
the first time apfel did it was when os 10.something (10.3?,  10.4?) 
dropped support for non-intel processors, and that IMO was necessary.
