It is about filter area too. The filter for my R75/5 had the same or
more filter area (reportedly) What is stupid is the tiny mushroom
filter on an OM617 or OM603 engine, whether it is paper or K&N.

Yeah, kinda what a filter is for.
If the K&N is cleaned and oiled often, it can do okay. But I
rarely find ones that are so cared for.
I stuck one on the 617 one time. Pretty noticeable difference.
With a turbo, it shouldn't matter much. At low RPM, there isn't
much air moving through the filter so filter restriction is not a
big factor. When the turbo spools up, there is excess air that the
waste gate "dumps", so the restriction of the filter doesn't matter
until it's really bad.
On a normally aspirated engine, though, the restriction of the
filter can be pretty noticeable.
