In my state, the light is supposed to be yellow long enough for you to get 
there if you're too close to stop without slamming on the brakes when it turns 
yellow. 

By law, if it's red when you enter the intersection, you ran the light.
If you accelerate in response to a yellow light, you ran the light. 
If somebody is in the intersection when the light turns green, you yield to 
them, as they were already there. 
Are other states/districts different from Michigan?
