The "wild west" wasn't all that wild, compared to the culture in the East at that time. During much of this countries history, the right of self defense has prevailed. It's only recently that the culture has dictated it's no longer necessary to defend yourself. With the rise in crime against persons and property, the tide of public opinion has shifted back to the idea of personal responsibility for self defense. Amazingly, despite the warning buzzers in cars, some people still choose to always wear their seat belts... some do not..
