Ok whoever Left Coast Geek is on benzworld knows quite a bit. Apparently
there is an independent fuse for each beam on each side...guess I need to
check them all. Definitely swap in the new stalk switch and maybe swap out
the relay for good measure.

Both low beams went out at night on the road. I discovered later that
the high beams work. I checked fuses. No problem. I bought and installed
bulbs in each light one at a time and tried the lights. Low beams still
out, but high beams work. Based on questions on line, this seems to be a
problem that happens with Mercedes. What do I check next to correct the
problem? Not practical to drive at night with just high beams. The closest
   dealer is 90 miles away.

study the wiring diagram, get in there with a volt meter and determine
   where the problem is.

there's also separate pages for coupe and cabrio...
looking at the wagon diagram, S4 is the combination switch on the stalk,
and S4s3 is the high/low switch contacts within that. one wire comes out of
that for high and another for low, these two wires go to the fuse panel,
where each is connected to a pair of fuses (so a fuse for left high, right
high, left low, right low), then those 4 fuses go to the
light-failure-monitor mess N7, and N7 in turn connects to each of the lamps.
so... turn on your (not working) low beams, and see if there's voltage
on the low beam fuses (14 and 13, I think?)... if not, its probably the
S4s3 switch (or the wires between that switch in the steering column, and
   the fuse panel)...
