So I caved in a coupla weeks ago after this thing was bugging me for months to
do a restart for some updates. Big mistake. Safari would no longer load, my
external monitor was having or causing problems with the internal display on
wake up, or not working, or blanking the internal display, or locking up the
system altogether. Then I noticed my network was incredibly slow, couldn’t
download or upload anything from any device, Netflix/AP barely working, net
surfing no bueno, it was like being on dial up again.

I finally found this process nsurlsessiond running that was basically sucking
up the entire upload bandwidth, sending huge amounts of data to somewhere,
constantly. If I killed it, it popped up again a few seconds later, started
sending data again. So basically anytime my machine had network access it was
sucking up all the bandwidth, both up and down (somehow , was not showing
download of anything appreciable, just upload). I ran a bunch of bandwidth
tests on multiple computers, with that machine connected and that process
running I was only getting a few kb/sec up/down. Crazy. I’d take that machine
offline and I’m back to like 15Mb/sec down 1 up, all was good again.

Research suggested it had something to do with iCloud but fooling with those
settings wouldn’t kill it. In any case it was a new phenomenon so due to
something Apple had in that update.

Somewhere in there my uverse modem crapped too, maybe it was OK and it was this
problem. In any case I got a new modem and it seems to fine (and a better one
too).

I called Apple support, the guy saw it going on with a remote screen share
(kinda creepy), recommended reloading the OS which is going on now, maybe that
will solve it.

Anyway fun times...
