on further consideration, i realize it has probably been 100 or 150k
miles since I checked wheel bearings. It is quite possible that the
bearings have worn a bit.

Sometimes I have noticed the same thing. I hypothesized that it was due to the
rotor getting a little twisted due to too much play in the bearing and rubbing
on the pads

tonight #1 daughter said her car needs a GP. OK, I just hope it is not #3.
She also said it squeals (in the front) when turning right, or turning right
while braking. That is an odd one. It reportedly is not a brake squeal.
Other than brake pads, all I can think of is to check the calipers are tight to
the spindle and check wheel bearings.
Am I missing something?
