With any engine you have noise sources from engine noise, such as reciprocating components and combustion, as well as from exhaust gasses and cooling air. Air cooled engines are the worst, as they have no water jacket to cut down on some of the noise.
You can reduce noise by covering or shrouding the engine, but then you have to assure cooling air flow. Exhaust noise can be dealt with through larger mufflers.
